About our Fifth Grade Curriculum
Fifth grade isn't easy; there's no denying that. We'll be working hard this year, and I'll admit that at times, it may seem overwhelming. But just remember that you made it this far, and with a little bit of hard work, you'll fly through fifth grade before you know it. Here's what to expect in the subjects we'll be covering. (Click the subject headings to find cool online links for those subjects!)
ReadingGet ready, because we're going to do a LOT of reading this year! There are lots of books I want to share with you, and books you'll want to share with others. We'll be doing some reading together using our textbook, I'll read aloud to you every now and then, and you're going to work on certain books with partners. It's going to be really exciting!

MathWe're very lucky - our math books have all sorts of online applications, and it'll make it a breeze to review together. We cover some pretty cool topics in fifth grade, like long division. I love math, and I hope that if you don't already, you will by the time the year is over!

ScienceScience is a really interesting subject in fifth grade. We study a lot of different things. The topics we'll cover are scientific inquiry, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, landforms and oceans, properties of matter, and forces and motion. I plan to do lots of hand-on activities and experiments, so get ready!

Social Studies
If you've talked to any of my former students, then you know that social studies is one of my favorite subjects. In fifth grade, we'll study everything from Reconstruction, which took place after the Civil War, all the way to present day social studies! It's going to be a blast!

SpellingEvery Monday, you'll receive a list of spelling words. We'll practice these words on Tuesday, and we'll have our official test on Friday. Every time you make a 100 on a spelling test, your name will go on the website. At the end of the quarter, anyone who has achieved spelling greatness at least five times will receive a special treat!

WritingWriting is an incredibly important skill to develop, so plan to do a lot of it in fifth grade! We'll do all sorts of writing, including poetry, letters, skits, and flyers. You'll do a lot of descriptive and informational writing, and there will be time for you to do "free writing" in your journals as well. We'll spend a lot of time focusing on grammar and punctuation so that your writing is the best it can possibly be.
